Make A Salad is an extended performance piece that examines time through horticulture, woodworking, sewing, ceramics, connection, and service. Engaging in new experiences, Roberts disrupts the mental timeline of routine to expand her perception of time. Observing a vegetable garden grow reflects time’s passage in subtle yet tangible ways. The project began in April 2024, when Roberts cleared her backyard and built a garden bed with the help of her Mother, Sister, and neighbors. A second garden, cultivated on the SFSU campus with her peers, became a communal space for both literal and metaphorical growth. As Roberts learned new skills, she connected with teachers, fellow artists, and local passersby. Strangers stopped to chat while she watered the campus garden; peers harvested vegetables and offered to help. This growing network of shared labor and conversation transformed the ordinary task of salad-making into a collective experience. Alongside expanding her perception of time and fostering community, Roberts developed a profound respect for those who grow our food, navigating the unpredictable variables of soil health, weather, and local animals—a process both frustrating and enlightening.
